At the June 24 service, it was decided to name the the church Skycrest Methodist Church. Due to the illness of Rev. Anker, on September 1, 1956, Rev. E.C. Chastain was appointed pastor. Ground was broken on January 27, 1957, for the first unit of the church. Two years later, membership had grown to 450, making it necessary to expand the facilities. The second unit was consecrated on May 24, 1959. It consisted of 16 classrooms, the pastor's study, Fellowship Hall, kitchen and expanded auditorium seating from 275 to 475. In 1962, additional property across the Nimbus Avenue was purchased and on December 6,1964, ground was broken for our present sanctuary. A consecration service was held in September of 1965. With the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church, we became Skycrest United Methodist Church. In 1968, ground was broken for a large addition to the church school building. It was completed and consecrated in April 1969. On October 4, 1973, fire ravaged the Fellowship Hall and classrooms adjoining the kitchen. Reconstruction began immediately and on June 1,1975, the new building was consecrated. Membership in 1978 had grown to 1,536. In the fall of 1984 remodeling for enlarging the sanctuary narthex was begun; this new addition was dedicated in April 1985. |
