What to Expect

What times are your church services?

We have two service times on Sunday mornings: 9:45am Modern and 11:00am Traditional. Each service lasts about an hour.

How do I get to Skycrest United Methodist Church?

We’re located on Drew Street in beautiful Clearwater, Florida.  Our church campus is on either side of Nimbus Avenue.  North East Coachman Road is a cross-street that runs at a diagonal and ends right in front of us.

Where do I park?

Skycrest has two parking lots; a small, paved lot in front of our Education building next to the playground and a grass lot in front of our Sanctuary.  There are a few handicap parking spaces available in front of the Sanctuary on the east side of Nimbus Avenue.  The entrance for the 9:45am Modern service is located through the glass double doors near the playground (west side of Nimbus Avenue) and the entrance for the 11:00am Traditional service is located through the glass double doors in the Sanctuary (east side of Nimbus Avenue), near our garden area.

What should I expect when I arrive?

Greeters will welcome you to both worship services and give you a bulletin that provides a brief worship order, announcements and contact information.A gift for first-time guests is available at the welcome tables in each worship service. Have a seat and make yourself at home. Feel free to let the greeters know if you have any questions, or need directions to the restrooms, nursery, etc.

What are the worship services like?

We offer two church services on Sunday mornings. Our Modern Service (9:45am) is a casual worship environment. We meet in our Fellowship Hall. Feel free to dress comfortably – jeans and ties are equally welcome.  Worship usually begins with music that includes guitars, drums, keyboards, and singing.  Our pastor speaks on Scripture and relevant topics.  We celebrate Communion (bread & juice) each Sunday, in which all are invited to participate.

Our Traditional Service (11:00am) in our sanctuary is slightly more formal in dress, music, and order of worship. Our music is usually accompanied by our choir and organ. This service follows a more structured order (found in the bulletin), that includes hymns, creeds, prayers, Scripture, and a sermon. The pastor delivers a similar message in both Traditional and Modern worship.  Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month, in which all are invited to participate.

What about my children?

During 9:45am Modern Worship, children are welcome to worship with their families; there are coloring sheets and quiet activites, and a Kids Message led by our pastor.  Babies and toddlers are welcome in the service or in our Nursery.

SkyKids (often referred to as Sunday School), starts at 11:00am for age 4 through 5th grade, upstairs in the Education building.  We follow a faith-based curriculum and kids will do lots of playing, crafts, games, artwork, and drama!  Families must escort their children upstairs and check-in with one of the Kids Ministry Leaders and are expected to return at noon to pick up their children.

Our Nursery is available from 9:30am to noon.  There are screened Nursery staff and volunteers to care for our youngest guests.  The Nursery is open to all newborns through 3 year olds.  We ask that families provide diapers, wipes, and bottles.  A small snack and drink will be provided unless otherwise noted by guardians.  Please check-in and out with our Nursery Leaders.

Kids activity bags are available in both worship services for kids who wish to stay with their families.  They include coloring sheets and quiet activities.

What about my youth?

The youth (6th-12th grade) participate in Worship with the rest of the congregation on Sunday mornings.

The youth gather Sunday evenings from 5:00pm to 7:30pm for fellowship and Bible study!

Do I have to give money?

There are no conditions to worship at Skycrest – as a visitor, you don’t need to give anything at all.  We do encourage our members and regular attenders to pray about commiting a portion of their income to God’s work at Skycrest UMC.  We also believe that giving of our time and our talents is equally important.  There is a time in each service when folks will place their offering money (along with their attendance cards) in a basket.  You can feel free to participate as you wish.

SKYCREST History

Our church began as a dream in 1956 when the Reverend Henry Blackburn, Pastor of First Methodist Church; the Rev. Harry Anker, a former missionary; and a layman by the name of Mr. J.C. Marceron envisioned its beginning in east Clearwater. Under their combined leadership, a small group of neighbors assembled that year to discuss the possibility of a new church.

They met in a small white frame house located on the present property, facing Drew Street, and those attending were asked to bring their own chairs. Rev. Anker conducted the first service on Sunday, May 27 1956.

About that time, three lots on Drew Street, between Cirus and Nimbus Avenue, were purchased and plans were begun to raise the funds needed to begin work on the church buildings. Through prayer, generous gifts and support from other area churches, construction began in January 1957 and was completed in May of that year.

In response to the needs of a growing congregation, additional property on Nimbus Avenue was purchased for parking and future expansion in 1962. On December 6, 1964 ground was broken for our new sanctuary and it was consecrated on September 12, 1965.

Two years later, because of the increase in membership, there was an urgent need for expansion of existing facilities. Wings were built on either side of the original unit to increase seating capacity and to house classrooms, the pastor’s study, fellowship hall, and a kitchen.

Early one morning in October, 1973, disaster struck as fire ravaged the fellowship hall and classrooms adjoining the kitchen. Fortunately, no one was injured and plans were made immediately for reconstruction. The new building was consecrated in June, 1975. An addition to the sanctuary, which included an expanded narthex, was begun in 1985 and in April of that year.

In 1989 the Skycrest Child Development Center was established by Doug and Teresa Jones and this ministry was assumed by the church in 1999. It is one of the top-ranked preschools in Pinellas County, offering preschool, Voluntary Pre-kindergarten, and an after-school care program.

We give grateful thanks to the charter members for the heritage that was left in our care. We are blessed to still have Pat Lacy – one of the 25 members of the original congregation as part of our church family. May Skycrest continue to serve God, our community and our congregation for many more years!
